Outpatient procedures are less expensive and more focused on individual care, than comparable hospital surgeries. Wheaton Eye Clinic opened its $4.2 million DuPage Eye Surgery Center in April, 2007 in answer to patients’ growing needs for ambulatory surgical care.
DuPage Eye Surgery Center is an 8,500-square-foot facility that houses three operating rooms and space for all ancillary services needed for pre-op, recovery, family waiting areas, and necessary support services. It handles up to 5,000 adult cataract, corneal, glaucoma, retinal, and oculoplastic surgeries each year.
DuPage Eye Surgery Center is licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health as well as Medicare, and accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).
Patient safety, comfort and well-being are top priorities at the DuPage Eye Surgery Center of Wheaton Eye Clinic. Experienced nurses and technicians work with physicians to make certain every out-patient surgical experience is stress-free. Reviewing the following information will help make your visit even more successful.
Most laboratory tests will be done just prior to surgery. Your doctor may order certain tests in advance. Please have test results faxed to 630.665.3683.
A nurse from the Surgery Center will try to reach you by telephone 1-5 days prior to your surgery to give you instructions and answer any questions you may have about your surgery. If you need to speak with a nurse prior to this, please call 630.665.3690.
Unless otherwise instructed by your surgeon, do not eat anything after midnight on the night before your surgery. Eat a light dinner. Please inform your physician if you have a cold, infection, fever or any other illness prior to coming to the Surgery Center.
You must have a responsible person (age 18 or older) accompany you to the DuPage Eye Surgery Center, drive you home after discharge and remain with you for 24 hours after surgery. You cannot drive immediately after surgery.
It is necessary for you to arrive 1½ hours prior to your scheduled procedure, unless otherwise instructed. Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
Do not bring jewelry or valuables with you. You will be asked to remove your contact lenses or glasses, so please bring the appropriate case with you.
Upon your arrival, please report to the registration desk. Have your insurance card, driver’s license (or photo ID) and any other billing information available. After registration, you will be taken to the pre-operative area where a nurse will assist you. A medical assessment will be done, including taking your blood pressure and other tests as indicated by your doctor.
If you are going to be put to sleep during your surgery, the anesthesiologist will also examine you. If time permits, your responsible person will be allowed to visit with you until it is time for you to be taken to the operating room.
After surgery, you will be taken to the recovery room where your responsible person will join you. Specific instructions for your home care will be given to you and your responsible person.
Do not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours following your discharge. You may experience dizziness or sleepiness after surgery.
Follow your surgeon’s instructions concerning activity level, medication and diet when you go home. Unless you are instructed to do otherwise, drink only clear liquids at first, slowly progressing to heavier foods. Do not drink alcoholic beverages until a full day after your procedure.

If your surgeon should decide to admit you to Central DuPage Hospital for any reason, we have arrangements to transport you efficiently and safely. Your medical records and physician’s orders will accompany you to assure continuity of your care.
